Halo 2 is one of the most well known First Person Shooters. My mom did pretty well on Halo 2 but couldn't get past Operation Firewalk on Rainbow 6 Critical Hour. :) Now Doom 3 was more entertaining and it was easier to navigate. Halo 2 is quite possibly the funnest first person shooter either by yourself or with friends. Set in the future in space. Mission to destry the covenant Elite, then find Flood and have to fight them. Cooperative missions, team fighting, and Death matches.
Basic Halo 2 Weapons are pistols, plasma rifles, basic Army weapons, and alien technologies. Finding items is totally random, spend some time searching.
Rainbow 6 series has the same characters, different missions. Ding Chavez is the American Commander, Deiter Weber is the German Sniper, Eddie Price a British Assault Specialist, Louis Loiselle the French Assault.
With Doom 3 check everything in the PDA's for hints on finding the security codes, read and listen to everything. Try to stay loaded with your weapons always.
First person shooters are focus games for the new player and relaxing games as you get skilled in game play.
Some other First Person Shooters to investigate are Call of Duty, Return To Castle Wolfenstein, and Ghost Squad.
For real War Situations that actually happen try Call of Duty. It is rated highly and lots of fun.
Ghost Squad is not quite as challenging as Rainbow 6 but an awesome relax now sort of game.
